I can't help but cry, Randy Pausch has passed.
If he hasn't affected your life yet, please take the time to listen to his "Last Lecture".
I’ve hit a creative funk, a designer’s block and it just plain bugs me. I haven’t done any new illustrations in months. I haven’t felt that creative rush, that spiral of adrenaline when you know that you’re creating something out of nothing. I miss that feeling and I don’t know where it’s gone. I thought that I could use the upcoming holidays as my inspiration and do a batch of theme based illustrations. But I tap my toes to the music and go cross-eyed staring at the blank screen in front of me. I huff and puff, sigh and flop to one side of the keyboard all in a silent protest against this designers block. It’s been this way for months.
I live in a house of art; my husband is a painter, musician, carpenter, and writer who has the ability to do anything done creatively in this world. He is a man of many talents. I’m not as clearly driven. I’m a dabbler, I dabble and dip into it all and flip-flop my way through it. I’m still searching for my signature medium, something that comes naturally and flows easily. I know that it exists, a creative outflow just for me, I just need to have patients and dabble until I find it.
I’m thinking about learning quiltmaking. It would fit me as a designer. I think the difference between an artist and a designer is that an artist creates from scratch and a designer arranges what has already been created. Isn’t that the largest aspect of quilting, compiling, arranging and compositing? It’s like a plushy graphic design. Maybe.
