We've never celebrated Luna's birthday before, but when our friend Carolyn found out that it was this month she went into party planning mode. She loves our dog, more than any of her own pets or even her boyfriend! I thought it was just adorable that she wanted to do something special for Luna so the plan was set and last night we had a big birthday bash. Carolyn had a special treat made at the Bluegrass Barkery, an all organic dog friendly cake with Luna's name in pink frosting. The cake was an absolute hit and a hilarious event to watch. She went all out and even got a few toys and treats too, including an dog blanket, embroidered with Luna's name. Too funny!
I had cooked dinner for everyone, ginger chicken with veggies and the humans ate outside on our new picnic table, under the shade of our maple tree. A couple of our new friends came over too, and for the first time since moving into our house the driveway was completely filled with cars and we started taking up the street parking, all for a dogs birthday party. The ping-pong table was brought out and the boys started a tournament, the girls sat inside chatting about hair and music, at one point two guitars and a banjo were being played and the girls beat the boys in a game of taboo. We all had a great time and as everyone left in the early morning hours they each patted Luna on the head and wished her a happy birthday.
This weekend was filled with house projects. I'm amazed at how much we were able to get done and how little money we spent in the process. Saturday was spent taking everything out of the workshop, filling the driveway, and piece by piece organizing and finding a place for everything. Jon built a great workbench, we put up shelving and even were able to mount our bicycles from the wall. Its now a nice clean organized productive space, Jon finally has his workshop in working order.
Sunday my mom came over with the idea of helping me build a compost bin and rain barrel, which is somehting I've been dreaming of doing since we purchased our home. We spent $30 at the hardware store and a few hours later had a working rain barrel, made from a garbage can, screen and a downspout. I used stakes to make a 3 x 3 square and used plastic chicken wire to wrap a sturdy 4ft high square to be filled with compost. My original plan was to purchase a rain barrel and compost bin but after shopping online I realized that I could easily spend hundreds of dollars on these things and it wasn't necessary, they were extremely simple to make and real easy on the bank.
After working on the house all weekend we met up with a few friends in our neighborhood park for a tennis match. We had a great time and laughed at how horrible and out of practice we all were. Its been over a year since Jon and I played. We tied Luna to the net pole because there was a family in the courts with us and we did not know it they were comfortable with dogs. As we began our game she went to chase the ball and flung herself up in the air, flipped off her collar and landed on her back! I almost had a heart attach right there! We all ran to check on her and she ended up being fine but it was an awful fright. No more tying up Luna. We let her run free, luckily the family next to us was not bothered by her occasional visit. After a few hours of ball chasing we took a break and noticed that there was blood. Luna had ran so much on the concrete that she wore down her nail till it was bleeding! As silly as it sounds, I've made the decision to buy her doggy boots. I just cannot bare to watch her paw pads scraped and peeling and her nails filed down to nothing. So today, I'm shopping for dog boots. Don't laugh!
I took a little time this morning to play with Luna outside in the snow and caught this beautifully intense shot, only she could pull off looking so elegant while covered in snow.
While watching my invigorated puppy race around the back yard, something rubbed off and I was overcome with the urge to build a snowman. I found myself rolling a snowball and the next thing I knew I had four feet of snow built up and was running around the kitchen searching for edible facial features and extra winter accessories.
I caught her yesterday on Jon's recliner, saggy diaper and everything, using her stuffed duck toy as a pillow. As if to say "It sucks being a girl dog."
My VOX t-shirt came in the mail today (my prize for winning the banner design contest) and I happily pulled out a soft pretty red tee with a few extra goodies. I'd requested a large and they'd said they ran small, thats an exaggeration.. its not small its tiny! The great thing is its one more thing to add to my goal list. With my diet I've already lost 11 pounds and It shouldn't take me long to squeeze comfortably into the VOX shirt. I wanted to show everyone how great it looks so to lighten the mood I put it on Luna, Labrador model extraordinar!
