Although I had taken so many beautiful photographs this winter, my favorite shot was one that was taken by Jon during the ice storm we had experienced earlier this month. We spent an afternoon wandering the arboretum which had been turned into a winter-wonderland, I had my digital camera and Jon had taken my fish eye lomo camera along to take a few shots of his own and out of the hundreds of photos we had taken that day, this is my favorite. The way the sun bursts, the trees shimmer in ice and our footsteps walking off into the distance, I just love it.
Each time I walk the historic tree lined paths of the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, the photographer in me takes over and my heart pounds with excitement. From the craftsmanship of the Shaker's furniture to the pegboard wrapped halls that tell their story, the village is an absolute dream to photograph.
This past Saturday we spent the day wandering through the village with Jon's family. This was the fifth time I've visited these historic buildings, yet I still found myself awestruck by the interior of the Shaker homes. The way the shadows and light play on every surface is stunning and I can't help but leave the village with a smile and a handful of favorite photographs.
When I got home from our trip to St. Louis and the memorable Radiohead concert, I ran quickly to my laptop to unload 2 gigs worth of video and images that I had taken of the concert. I quickly grabbed a few easy shots to throw online and didn't have the time to really go through and labor of them as I usually like to do. Until what is now a week later.
I spent hours digging through gritty noise filed over exposed blurry pictures and found a handful of keepers that I'm very impressed with. Check out my flickr sideshow, with still shots and video taken at the show. Plus in the spirit of it all I also downloaded a great quality bootleg of the whole concert, so that I can relive each moment.
It is absolutely beautiful outside and I wanted to take a photograph of the yellow daffodils lining my driveway. I got out my camera, excited to take my first spring photos and trotted out to the curb to line up my shot. As I took my first picture the camera starting making strange noises and it would not auto-focus. It sounded like a hamster going around a squeaky wheel. I walked inside to take a better look and it just kept clicking and clacking. It seems that the shutter is closing and opening constantly. My S3 just ended its warranty about four months ago.
In desperation I dug out my old standard, my AE-1. Would you believe that the shutter is stuck too. Ugh! Last summer I was doing star trail photography and using a manual shutter release had locked up some mechanism. I hadn't had the time to bring it into the shop and I had completely forgotten about it.
So, now it seems I'm camera-less and its spring, my very favorite time of year to take pictures. I think I may cry a little...

A newly charged battery and everything is a'ok!
From the moment I stepped foot in Florida I could only think about
putting my toes in the sand, I really missed that feeling so much. Just
as planned our first day was spent lounging on the beach. it was a
prefect day; a cool ocean breeze, full sun and some of the most
picturesque skies I've seen in a long while. I brought along my
fish-eye lomo camera, a christmas gift from Jon, and went hog wild.
Yesterday morning I woke up with a miserable head cold, I called in sick and spent the day on the couch. I took my miracle cure and that night I broke my fever. I feel much better today, though my nose is slightly stuffy and my throat feels like sandpaper, at least my head feels clear and I can finally think straight.
Though it isn't quite my birthday yet (Nov. 6th) Jon wanted me to open my gift last night, he said I could use it this weekend and that he really wanted me to open it early (he will be out of town next weekend). I had no idea what It could be, it wasn't from my list! I thought, maybe a sewing machine but he brought me something about the size of a tissue box. I tore the rapping paper and noticed a red label and the words canon. It couldn't be... a new lens?! I beautiful wide angle lens?!? How did he ever know! It wasn't on any of my lists and I would have never asked for something so big this year. What a surprise!
The plan had been to wake up early today and drive an hour out to the gorge to take fall sunrise photos. This seems to be a tradition for us around this time of year, a way to celebrate my birthday doing what I love, hiking and photography. Though my fever broke in the early morning hours, I still feel sick and don't need to be pushing myself. Tomorrow is another day and hopefully then I will feel up to it because I cannot wait to get out and take some photos with this new beauty.
