As you can see from the picture my yard is completely surrounded by wood fencing and though it works wonderfully for Luna its not to pretty to look at. My grandmother recommended I look into the Pyracantha (fire-thorn) bush, it was always a favorite of hers. I did a bit of research and found that it is perfect for my yard with its bold color all year; white blooms in the spring, bright green foliage in summer, and bold red-orange berries throughout the winter. Plus it is resistant against fire blight a disease which has destroyed my pear tree (center), which we will have to chop down this spring and possibly replace with a dogwood.
The hybrid of Pyracantha that I'm looking for "Mohave" is ending up being harder to find than I had expected. I've emailed a few local nursery's and hope to be able to order enough to cover the back section of the fence. I've only found three places where I can purchase them online, but I'd much rather go local if possible.
I just can't wait to put on some shorts, tie my hair back, grab a shovel and get planting. This year spring just isn't coming fast enough for me.
I guess I haven't talked much about our upcoming vacation, so here's the scoop; It has been a tradition since I was a child that we would all get together and have Christmas dinner, cousins, aunts & uncles, friends, neighbors, since I have a large family its usually a gathering of around 40 people. In the past few years some of us have moved away and its been next to impossible for me to get back home. I have a weeks paid vacation saved up, its a big trip, three states away and a fourteen hour drive but its set we are going to Florida for Christmas.
Florida Vacation Plans:
Dec 21th - Arrive at Mom's winter home in the evening (Port Charlotte, FL)
Dec 22th - Spend the day with 5 of my cousins and 3 dogs at the beach (Venice, FL)
Dec 23th - Visit with Jon's Father (Tampa, FL)
Dec 24th - Help the family prep food for Christmas, build gingerbread houses and such (Englewood, FL)
Dec 25th - Christmas at Grandmoms house (Englewood, FL)
Dec 26th - Spend an afternoon at the lighthouse in the sand, eat seafood and relax (Boca Grande, FL)
Dec 27th - Go to my hometown, eat more seafood, and visit with Scuba-Steve, Tracey & Leo (Marco Island, FL)
Dec 28th - Early morning drive back to Kentucky.
I know the agenda is tight and there are a lot of things I want to accomplish. In order to complete my list we have to drive all up and down the gulf coast of Florida. I know it will all be worth it though and we are truly lucky to have so many friends and family who want to see us while we are in town, In fact I've had to turn down a few invitations. I'm really excited to get back home, see my family and friends, eat fresh seafood, and enjoy the sun.
